Equip a gem drill or a rotary tool with the appropriately sized drill bit to create small holes such as those needed for beading. For standard, screw-thread size holes, a standard drill with at least 14.4 volts of power may be sufficient; however, the use of a hammer drill for standard to medium-sized holes is more common. A drill press is another possibility if the stone is mobile. Use only a carbide or diamond tip masonry bit. For medium to large holes, diamond coring drill bits are also available.- 2Secure small, unstable stones in a vice.
- Put on safety glasses to ensure protection from flying bits of rock. Wear a dust mask to avoid inhalation of dust.
- 4Mist the drill bit and the area to be drilled with water.
- 5Increase the drill speed as the hole becomes established. Move the drill bit in and out, in a rocking motion, if not using a hammer drill.
- 6Stop the drill periodically to blow out rock bits in the hole and to cool the bit and the stone with more water. If using a coring bit, it may be necessary to use a chisel and hammer to remove matter from the hole.
